UW-La Crosse Cuts Baseball

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Madison - UW-La Crosse officials have decided to drop the school's baseball program, effective immediately, the Journal Sentinel has learned. School officials have not formally announced the decision but they are looking to trim costs.

The decision leaves the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with just six baseball programs -- UW-Whitewater, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Stout and UW-Superior.

WIAC commissioner Gary Karner declined comment Friday. According to the La Crosse media guide, the Eagles have been playing baseball since 1939. La Crosse entered the 2008 season with an overall record of 852-793-8. The Eagles finished fourth in the WIAC with a 13-11 record and were eliminated in the first round of the WIAC tournament to finish 22-16 overall. Before Friday, UW-River Falls was the last WIAC school to drop baseball. That move came after the 2002 season.

Note: Manitowoc native Chris Schwarz was the Head Coach at UW-La Crosse.  Chris played many seasons for the Bandits and was its Field Manager for two seasons, accumulating 80 wins in two summers.
